MEET SUZY SPOON

Suzy Spoon’s Vegetarian Butcher is a vegetarian deli café on King Street Newtown Sydney Australia. Spoons hand make their own brand of vegan Sausages, Burger Patties, Schnitzels, Seitan, Smokey Rasher and Bolognese. Their products can be bought in packs and taken home to cook, or eaten at the cafe, in the form of delicious meals such as burgers, spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, breakfasts and lots more.

Spoon's inspiration comes from the desire to create delicious cruelty free, meat free meals that are quick to prepare, taste great and are not over processed or made of un-natural ingredients.

Suzy Spoon has been cooking vegan food for over 20 years. In that time she has owned and run 2 vegetarian businesses, worked in numerous cafes and been the personal chef to vegan actor Toby Maguire while he was in Sydney filming The Great Gatsby. Toby was very encouraging and inspired Suzy to start selling her vegan sausages and other products to the public.

The business was launched at Marrickville Organic Farmers Market in May 2012, and was such a hit within 4 months they had moved to a little shop in Enmore. At that stage Suzy was running the business with a friend, but they wanted to take the business in opposing directions, so they parted company and Suzy went out on her own moving the business to a bigger shop front on prominent King Street in Newtown.

Since moving to the new location the business has gone from strength to strength. They have expanded their range of hand made products and are open from 8am for breakfasts, until 9pm for dinners on the weekends. They sell their products to local café’s and restaurants and you can now order their products online.

Vegans and vegetarians are not their only customers, Spoon’s clientele are people from all walks of life. There are people who come in shopping for a family member or friend, others who have been told to eat less meat by their doctor and people who are just curious about 'what on earth is a vegetarian butcher?'

There is some controversy surrounding the name of the Vegetarian Butcher. Some vegetarians find the use of the word ‘butcher’ offensive, while some meat eaters and butchers are appalled by the concept. The name has been the subject of many welcome Facebook posts, blogs and comments.

Suzy has been vegetarian for 28 years but interestingly her grandmother’s family used to own the biggest butchery in the Northern suburbs of Sydney (SW Hales). With many local butcheries closing down Suzy believes this new spin on the butcher concept is a sign of the times.
